Breastmilk Soap: A Simple Little Bar Made With a Whole Lot of Love
Sometimes the simplest things are the most special.
Recently, I had the opportunity to make a batch of breastmilk soap for my niece and her baby. No fragrance. No flashy colors. No unnecessary extras. Just a simple, handmade bar created with carefully chosen ingredients—and something incredibly personal from mama herself.
Why breastmilk soap?
Breastmilk contains naturally occurring fats, proteins, sugars, vitamins, and other components that make it pretty remarkable stuff. When it's incorporated into cold-process soap, it also replaces some or all of the liquid normally used to make the soap.
But I think it's important to be clear about something: soap is not breastmilk in bar form.
Soapmaking involves a chemical reaction called saponification, so we shouldn't assume that all of the beneficial components of fresh breastmilk remain unchanged in the finished soap—or promise that breastmilk soap can treat eczema, rashes, or other skin conditions.
What we can appreciate is the simplicity of the finished bar.

For baby, less can be more.
Baby skin can be sensitive, and fragrance isn't necessary for getting skin clean. For this loaf, I intentionally left out fragrance oils, essential oils, artificial colors, and decorative additives.
The goal wasn't to make the fanciest bar on the shelf.
It was to make a gentle, uncomplicated soap with a short ingredient list and no added scent.
And because it's handmade in a small batch, I know exactly what went into it.
And there's something else you can't put on an ingredient label.
Breastmilk represents an incredible amount of time, work, and love. Turning a small amount of it into a batch of soap creates something mama and baby can continue to use after those feeding days have passed.
It's practical, personal, and a little sentimental.
Which, if you ask me, is a pretty lovely combination.
Simple ingredients. No added fragrance. Made by hand. Made with love.
Sometimes a little bar of soap doesn't need to be anything more complicated than that.
